Born in Corella (Navarra) in 1960, Architect by the Madrid University Technical School of Architecture (ETSAM) in 1985, graduated First-class Honours with Distinction, Number 1 of Class 137. Awarded with the Extraordinary Prize. Phd in Architecture with outstanding Cum Laudae by ETSAM in 2004. Associated Professor at ETSAM Projects Department. since 1989, and actual Full professor at ETSAM in the same department since July 2012. He works professionally in Madrid, where he founded the Ruiz Barbarin Arquitectos architectural studio – ARQUIMANIA, executing projects all over Spain as well as in China, Thailand, Oman, Ecuador, Colombia, Brasil, India or Russia. His work has been amply published in books and magazines, both domestic and foreign. He has been awarded with several distinctions: the Council of Madrid Architecture Prize (1986, 1992 and 1994), Quality Award “Arquitectura y Vivienda” Comunidad de Madrid (2000 and 2003), “Premio Churriguera” of Urban Design (2001), “Premio Pedro Bidagor” of Urbanism and Environment or the COAM award in 1992, 2002 and 2012 are only some of the many distinctions he has obtained during his extensive development of architectural culture. In 2003 he was selected winner of the International Competition for the ‘new Donghe city project’, in Baotou, China. He has always combined teaching with an impressive editorial work. From 1985 to 1987 he was co-founder and Co-Director of the architecture magazine EL CROQUIS INTERNACIONAL, and co-author of the books ‘“ARQUITECTURA ESPAÑOLA CONTEMPORÁNEA 1.975 -1.990 I y II’ (“Contemporary Spanish Architecture 1.975-1.990 I and II”) (1989), ‘MADRID MIRA A SUS ESTATUAS’ (“Madrid Contemplates its Statues”) (1992) and ‘LUIS BARRAGAN FRENTE AL ESPEJO. LA OTRA MIRADA’ (“Luis Barragán in the Mirror: the other Look”) (2008), ‘PRETEXTOS PARA HABLAR DE ARQUITECTURA’ (“Pretexts to talk about Architecture”) (2011), book-catalogue “1975 – 2010 ARQUITECTURA ESPAÑOLA * 35 Construyendo en democracia” (Spanish Architecture + 35 Years building in Democracy)., (2012) and “SETENTA ESCALONES. LA ESCALERA EN EL TIEMPO Y EL ESPACIO” (“Seventy Steps.The Staircase through Time and Space”) (2012). He has designed and directed several art and architecture expositions and is currently curator of the traveling exhibition: “1975-2010 Arquitectura española 35+. Construyendo en Democracia” Member of ASA (Sustainability and Architecture Association).
