The project looks to optimise the use of space in a home located in one of Madrid’s first residential skyscrapers, built in the 1960´s, to attempt to resolve the dense domestic arrangement the clients needed inside.
To do this, the corridors and all the void spaces were first eliminated and replaced by living areas where spaces for shared use are located.
As such, the project opts for the generation of an open, fluid space by eliminating partitions and leaving the structure open to view. This means that the structure ceases to be an “uncomfortable” element to be covered and camouflaged, converting it into an element integrated into the interior space. This contributes great added value, as, on the one hand, it acts as an element that helps to update and filter the entrance, lounge and dining room space and, on the other, it makes it possible to achieve the maximum ceiling space height, so giving the home a greater scale and improved spatial quality.
The texture of the mass concrete of the original structure is balanced by the use of sophisticated, light, polished elements in burnished stainless steel sheet. These light elements cover the columns to make them disappear and achieve carefully considered ambient lighting of the space using fine suspended strips in the same material. The careful design of light, delicate lacquered steel shelving, acting as a small filter at the entrance, completes the intervention.
The result: a space where installations, structure, finish material qualities, reflections and transparencies combine to create a versatile, fluid, bright space in which to enjoy family life.

Borja Peña (Madrid 1974) Arquitecto / Socio fundador de Beta.0.
Estudió en la Escuela Técnica Superior de Arquitectura de Madrid y en la Technische Universität de Darmstadt, entre 1992 y 2000. Posteriormente, concluyó sus estudios de Doctorado en el Departamento de Proyectos Arquitectónicos en la ETSAM.
Ejerce de Profesor ayudante de Proyectos Arquitectónicos en la ETSAM desde el año 2001-2004. Asimismo, ha sido profesor invitado en la Universidades Camilo José Cela y San Pablo CEU de Madrid.
Su amplia formación y la experiencia acumulada durante años de colaboración con prestigiosos estudios de arquitectura como el de Rafael Moneo, le han permitido establecer una oficina propia de alto nivel profesional, habiendo recibido numerosos premios por su actividad profesional. Cabe señalar recientemente el Premio Especial a la Mejor Rehabilitación 2012-2014 VETECO ASEFAVE por la obra del Rehabilitación del Picadero Cubierto en Madrid. Así mismo en el año 2012 fue distinguido, de entre 991 candidaturas, como uno de los 7 despachos emergentes más interesantes de Madrid, en el marco del programa cultural ARQUIA/PRÓXIMA, promovido por la Fundación Caja de Arquitectos.
Su trabajo ha sido premiado en diversos concursos nacionales e internacionales: Concurso de NSA 4 para 122 VPO de la EMVS; Concurso de Ideas para nuevas tipologías de viviendas V.P.O. en Cantabria; Concurso para el desarrollo de 75 VPO en Adelfas; Europan 5, Europan 6, Concurso Internacional para 325 VPO en el Lote4 del Barrio Avanzado de Toledo; Concurso Internacional para 260 VPO en el Lote7 del mismo Barrio y Concurso del Edificio de Oficinas en Pº de la Castellana 94.
Sus proyectos han sido publicados en distintas publicaciones especializadas: Arquitectos, Arquitectura COAM, el Croquis, A+T, TC cuadernos, Panorama, Arq Future, y en los libros NEXT COLLECTIVE HOUSING IN PROGRESS de A+T, Proyectos de la EMV 2004 y Un Siglo de Vivienda Social.
